Metro Mold and Design Opens New Headquarters

Located in Brooklyn Park, Minn., the company will now focus more on medical manufacturing.

This month, production began at Metro Mold and Design’s new $5.2 million, 100,000 square-foot medical manufacturing headquarters in Brooklyn Park, Minn. The town is suburb just northwest of Minneapolis, one of the country’s major medtech hubs.

MMD was founded in 1972, in Minnetonka, Minn. Company headquarters moved to Rogers, Minn. in 1983, where it remained until this year. The company provides rapid mold manufacturing, custom plastic injection molding, thermoset plastic molding, extrusion blow molding, precision CNC machining, product prototyping and product assembly and finishing for a range of industries including medical. Much of MMD’s decision to open its facility in Brooklyn Park centered on the city’s willingness to work with MMD to secure a $500,000 low-interest loan through the Minnesota Investment Fund, as well as an additional $600,000 in local assistance made available through the jobs bill legislation.

“We are excited to continue growing our footprint in Minnesota and to be bringing great new jobs to the local market,” said MMD Chief Financial Officer Greg Heinemann. “Our facility in Brooklyn Park has the capacity to employ 250 people, and we fully intend to ramp up to full capacity over the next five years.”

Most of the money invested in this facility is being used for expanding clean room manufacturing to answer the ever-growing demand for medical manufacturing in the area. The company will also now be providing micro-molding and high precision multi-axis swiss machining capabilities.

“As we’ve grown from $4.5 million in revenue in 2000 to over $50 million in revenue this year, we were nearly bursting at the seams in our old facility,” said CEO Tim Holland.
